How are bottles held and inverted during rinsing?

Bottles can be supported by the neck, body, base, a dedicated pocket or a manual holder; the correct method depends on geometry, stiffness, stability and the rinse sequence.

The bottle must be held at a repeatable reference while the opening is presented safely to the rinse medium.

Automatic and rotary machines may use guides, starwheels, pockets, clamps or neck-handling components. Semi-automatic stations may use a fixed holder or require the operator to place the bottle over a nozzle. Inversion can be complete or partial, depending on whether gravity is needed to remove debris or drain water.

The handling method must keep the opening aligned, avoid damage or deformation, and return the bottle to the downstream conveyor without an unstable transition. Physical samples are essential because drawings do not fully describe wall stiffness, centre of gravity or surface behaviour.

Trial method

Prove handling through every transition.

  1. Include the handling extremes. Test the tallest, lightest, widest, smallest-neck and least stable bottles.
  2. Mark contact areas. Inspect glass, decoration and flexible panels for scuffing, stress or deformation.
  3. Run normal and abnormal states. Include gaps, blockage, stop, restart and an empty pocket where relevant.
  4. Check the opening reference. Confirm nozzle alignment and that inversion does not trap debris or water.
  5. Record format parts and settings. Identify every guide, clamp, pocket, recipe and changeover reference used.
